Washington Hall, built in 1881, houses Notre Dame's dramatic theater today, but once served as a dormitory — including, legend has it, for star football player George Gipp. In December 1920, Gipp reportedly found the hall locked after a night out and chose to sleep outside rather than get caught sneaking in; he developed pneumonia soon after and died weeks later. Students and staff have long reported his ghost around the stage and greenrooms, along with footsteps on the roof and doors slamming on windless nights. Some accounts point instead to a steeplejack who fell to his death during 1886 construction, or to Brother Canute Lardner, who died in the building in 1946.
Notre Dame's 1881 theater, reopened in 2024 after a renovation. Visit through a campus performance; the building is otherwise a working campus venue.
