At the Council Oak in Highland Cemetery, visitors passing through at night report hearing the sound of a horse taking off through the cemetery. A massive bur oak, already an estimated 400 years old when the French explorer La Salle met here in May 1681 with Miami and Illinois leaders — with Potawatomi also present — to negotiate an alliance against Iroquois raids, once stood on this site, now part of Highland Cemetery. The tree survived two lightning strikes in the 20th century before a 1990 tornado finally felled it; a marker and the remaining stump commemorate the meeting today.
The famous oak fell in 1991, and a section of the trunk and a historical marker remain at Highland Cemetery. The cemetery is open during the day; visit quietly.
