Santa Fe, New Mexico

La Fonda sits at the end of the Santa Fe Trail on the plaza, and the present hotel dates to 1922. Newmexico.org and local ghost tours tell of an 1857 lynching of a gambler in the hotel's backyard and of Chief Justice John P. Slough, shot in the lobby in 1867. Guests have reported a man swinging from a tree while they dine in La Plazuela, a judge wandering the halls, a bride in the wedding suite and a cowboy ghost at the bar.
Operating hotel with restaurants and a bar right on the plaza; open to the public. Santa Fe ghost tours stop here.
