Mary Virginia "Ginnie" Wade, a 20-year-old woman, was the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg, shot by a stray bullet on July 3, 1863 while kneading bread in her sister's kitchen on Baltimore Street. The house is now a museum, and VisitPA lists it among the area's haunted sites. Visitors and staff speak of a sense of her presence, and of her father's grief, and of a chain in the basement that is found moved by no one.
House museum open daily in the visitor season with guided and self-guided visits; check hours. Please treat the site with respect, as a young woman died here.
