Garnet is one of Montana's best-preserved ghost towns, a gold-mining settlement in the Garnet Range that boomed in the 1890s and emptied after the mines declined and fires struck the town. Many of its wooden buildings, including the Wells Hotel and Kelly's Saloon, still stand under the care of the Bureau of Land Management and the Garnet Preservation Association. Southwest Montana's haunted-places guide names the spirits said to linger in Kelly's Saloon and the Wells Hotel. Walking the quiet street among the empty storefronts is the main draw.
Managed by the BLM with the Garnet Preservation Association. Reached by gravel roads from Highway 200 or from Bear Gulch near Drummond; the roads are rough in places and the town is accessible by wheeled vehicle roughly May to December. A visitor center and gift shop operate in season, and a small admission fee applies.
