Granite grew around one of the richest silver mines in the country after a strike in 1872 and held about 3,000 people before the silver market crashed in 1893. Parts of the miners' union hall, the superintendent's house, tramway structures and foundations stand in a 47-acre state park above Philipsburg, reached by a steep, rough road.
