The University of Montana in Missoula has a long tradition of campus ghost stories. Brantly Hall, a former women's residence hall, is said to be haunted by a young woman who died in 1929 after the stock market crash and the loss of her family's ranch; students tell of the sound of her high heels in the halls and a watched feeling in the basement. Main Hall, the university's oldest building, is often called its most haunted, with reports of knocks on doors with no one there, a dark-haired woman, clanking chains, and moving objects. Student and local newspapers have retold these stories for years. They are campus legends rather than documented events.
Public university campus; the grounds are open to walk and both halls can be seen from outside. Interior access varies by building, and Brantly Hall is a working residence hall. Please respect residents' privacy.
