The West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, a Gothic stone prison that opened in 1876 and closed in 1995, saw riots, fires and executions during its long history. West Virginia Tourism calls it among the most haunted prisons in the country, and Ghost Adventures spent a night locked inside it in a 2008 episode. Visitors tell of a Shadow Man and of whispering and arguing from the basement. The prison runs history tours, ghost hunts and private investigations.
