The Stillwell House on Ridge Avenue in Stone Mountain Village, circa 1820, is believed to be one of the oldest buildings in the village. It began as the only inn serving the Stone Mountain area, was used as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War, and later became the home of the Reverend Jacob Stillwell and his wife Mary. For years it operated as the Village Inn Bed and Breakfast, and it is also called Stillwell Manor in ghost-tour writing. Reported activity includes an apparition of a man heard singing, whistling and tapping in Morse code, slamming doors, flickering lights, pictures falling from walls and the smell of a cigar linked to Rev. Stillwell. Many of the soldiers who died there are among the unknown Confederate dead buried in Stone Mountain Cemetery.
