The Dakota, a Gothic-style apartment house on Central Park West completed in 1884, is a National Historic Landmark and the building outside which John Lennon was shot in 1980. New York ghost lists include it, and stories say Lennon's spirit has been seen near the entrance, though these are tales told by visitors and neighbors, not documented events. The building is a private co-op, and the nearby Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park is the public place to remember him.
Private residential building, not open to visitors. View it from the sidewalk and respect residents' privacy; Strawberry Fields in Central Park is a short walk away.
