The Stephen Crane House on Fourth Avenue in Asbury Park, a Victorian cottage tied to the family of the author of The Red Badge of Courage, is now maintained as a historic house and museum. Crane himself wrote about the supernatural in 1894 in an article called Ghosts on the New Jersey Coast, and his house is the subject of its own ghost stories: investigators have reported apparitions, the sound of children playing and crying, a female figure in the attic window, a man in Victorian dress on the second floor, and fireplace tools that struck visitors.
Historic house with limited open house hours, historically Sunday afternoons, and special events; check the Asbury Park Historical Society or the house's page before visiting.
