Fort Hancock was a U.S. Army coastal defense post on the Sandy Hook peninsula from the 1890s until 1974, guarding the entrance to New York Harbor, and its gun batteries, officers' row and other buildings are now part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Local press describes the old post as a place where ghosts have been known to linger, and the American Littoral Society runs an annual night walk called Spooky Tales and Ghosts of Historic Fort Hancock through its batteries and buildings.
Public national park unit open year-round, with a beach and trails; many of the old buildings are closed or under restoration. Join the seasonal night walk rather than exploring after hours.
