Built in 1833, St. James at Sag Bridge is the oldest Catholic church in the Chicago area, and its adjoining cemetery has carried the nickname "Monk's Castle" for generations, tied to a belief that monks once lived on the grounds. The site's ghost stories date back at least to a report in the Chicago Tribune on September 30, 1897, describing a phantom horse and carriage. Reported sightings since then include robed, chanting monks moving through the cemetery at night, a woman in white seen dancing among the graves, and a notable 1977 incident in which a police officer pursued hooded figures gliding up over the cemetery hill — only to find the graveyard completely empty when he reached the top.
Historic Catholic church and cemetery on the Illinois and Michigan Canal heritage corridor. The grounds are open daily during posted hours. Keep clear of services, stay on the paths, and treat the graves with respect.
