On December 28, 1956, sisters Barbara Grimes, 15, and Patricia Grimes, 12, disappeared in Chicago after going to see an Elvis Presley movie at a Brighton Park theater. Their deaths triggered one of the largest missing-persons investigations in Chicago history, with roughly 300,000 people questioned. Their bodies were found frozen in a snow-covered ditch near German Church Road in Willow Springs on January 22, 1957. A suspect, Charles LeRoy Melquist, was investigated but never definitively tied to the case, and the girls' murders remain officially unsolved nearly 70 years later. Near the site, where an old house once stood and now only a foundation remains, visitors report a persistent unease and say the sisters' presence can still be felt in the surrounding woods.
The girls' bodies were found beside German Church Road in Willow Springs, an ordinary public road with traffic. There is nothing marked to see and no safe place to stop. Two children were killed here in 1956, so please remember it with that in mind.
