The stone Santa Fe Depot in Atchison was built in 1880 as a freight depot for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. Restored, it now holds the Atchison County Historical Museum, a Kansas visitor information center, and the offices of the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce. The ghost story belongs to "Hangman Bill," said to be a freight worker who liked to ride loads as they were swung on and off railcars until a cable snapped and the cargo crushed him. Staff report heavy boots pacing overhead in a building with no second floor, along with unexplained poltergeist-style activity. The depot is also where Atchison's Haunted Trolley Tour begins, so the chamber that works in the building tells the story to visitors.
Visitor center and museum, open daily in summer (shorter hours Sunday) and weekdays plus Saturday in winter. The Haunted Trolley Tour departs from here on weekends in September and October; check Visit Atchison for current hours and tickets.
