The Sallie House in Atchison was built in the mid-1800s and is tied locally to Dr. Charles Finney. Local lore holds that a girl named Sallie died in the house during emergency surgery for appendicitis, though there is no record of a Sallie living or dying there, and the story may have grown up around the house's reputation. The haunting reports come from later residents, beginning with Tony and Debra Pickman, who moved in in 1993 and described objects moving, cold spots, and scratches on the men in the household; the ghost became known as the "man-hating ghost." The house has since been featured on Sightings, A Haunting, Paranormal Witness, Ghost Adventures in 2015, and BuzzFeed Unsolved. It is now offered to the public through the Atchison Chamber of Commerce's Visit Atchison program, which runs day tours and overnight investigations, so the story is told openly as a tour attraction.
Day tours and overnight stays with a guided investigation are booked through Visit Atchison, the city's visitor bureau. Overnight stays need a waiver and a two-person minimum, and they fill up quickly in the fall.
