Visitors at Rose Hill Cemetery have long reported seeing Civil War soldiers still dressed for battle wandering the hillsides at night and seeming to continue their fights, along with apparitions of Macon residents dressed in clothing from earlier eras, and locals tell of a shapeshifting spirit that haunts the cemetery at night, a figure a YouTuber says he captured on camera in 2019. The cemetery was established in 1840 on the bluffs above the Ocmulgee River and is the resting place of roughly 600 Union and Confederate soldiers alongside generations of Macon residents. Allman Brothers Band guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley, both of whom died in motorcycle accidents within a year of each other in the early 1970s, are buried side by side here, and singer Gregg Allman was laid to rest nearby decades later; the band spent time writing songs in the cemetery after moving to Macon in 1969, and fans still visit their graves regularly.
Public cemetery above the Ocmulgee River, open during daylight hours. Self-guided maps are available. Stay on the paths and be respectful of the graves.
