The Hollywood Roosevelt opened in 1927 on Hollywood Boulevard and hosted the very first Academy Awards in its Blossom Ballroom in 1929. Marilyn Monroe lived at the hotel for around two years early in her career, and the mirror that once stood in her room now hangs near the lower-level elevators; guests and staff have reported catching her reflection in it often enough that the hotel simply left it where it is. The other persistent report belongs to Montgomery Clift, who stayed three months in room 928 in 1952 while filming From Here to Eternity and spent long nights rehearsing the bugle for the part. Guests describe a trumpet heard through the walls, a radio and thermostat that adjust themselves, a man's silhouette in the bathroom, and the sensation of someone passing close by; housekeeping staff have been reluctant to work the room alone. Room numbering has shifted through renovations, so the room is sometimes cited as 929 or 930.
