Moon Point Cemetery, a family burial ground established by Jacob Moon in the 1830s — older than the Civil War — carries central Illinois's well-known "Hatchet Lady" legend. Local lore holds that a grieving mother, driven mad by her daughter's death, can be seen running through the cemetery on full-moon nights tossing hatchets and screaming at visitors to leave; another version holds she was a widow mourning a son lost in war. Visitors report ghostly dancing lights, red and white orbs, and strange sounds including what some describe as sarcophagus lids shifting. The cemetery is now closed to visitors after dark.
Historic cemetery closed to visitors at night, and local residents and police actively keep trespassers out. Visit only in daylight. A railroad track crosses the access road, so look both ways before you cross.
