Franklin College's Old Main, a grand building housing administration offices and classrooms, was one of three campus buildings damaged by fire within a five-month span in the mid-1980s, nearly destroyed in a blaze on April 21, 1985. Campus legend has since attached a death to the fire — variously described as a student hiding in the attic or a professor who'd hanged himself there decades earlier — but no documented record confirms either story. Students have reported smelling burning flesh and hearing screams in the attic, sometimes strongly enough that classes have been relocated. The building was also used to store theater props during a period when the drama department was inactive, and a door to the fourth floor has been found open despite being kept locked, alongside occasional unexplained power outages.
Old Main is an academic building, and the campus is a historic district. Tours of campus start at the Von Boll Welcome Center during business hours.
