Elizabethtown, called E-Town, began in 1866 after gold was found in Willow Creek near Baldy Mountain and reportedly held several thousand people, with seven saloons and the county seat for a few years. A 1903 fire destroyed most of it. The ruins of the Mutz Hotel, a store and a rebuilt church remain with a cemetery above the town, and parts are privately held by descendants of the Mutz family.
