Staff and visitors at Greystone Mansion have long reported unexplained sounds inside the house, and some describe cries heard in it at night. On the night of February 16, 1929, Ned Doheny, for whom the 46,000-square-foot Tudor mansion was built by his father, the oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, and his close friend and secretary Hugh Plunkett were found shot dead in a guest bedroom. The official account was that Plunkett, distraught, had killed Ned and then himself, but investigator Leslie White doubted it: he found a cigarette still in Plunkett's fingers and the gun beneath his body, oddly warm. The true sequence of events has never been settled. The City of Beverly Hills bought the estate and opened its grounds as a public park in 1971; the house itself opens only for tours and events.
Located at Greystone Mansion, a City of Beverly Hills public park; the grounds are open during posted park hours, though the mansion interior is generally closed to the public except for special events.
