Built in 1848-49 for philanthropist Willard Carpenter — who also built and endowed Willard Library — this Greek Revival house at 405 Carpenter Street was one of Evansville's most conspicuous landmarks in its day and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Public broadcaster WNIN bought the house in 1986 and used it as its headquarters until relocating in 2017. Staff and volunteers there described strange noises, objects moving when unwatched, and occasional sightings out of the corner of the eye.
The 1848 house now holds offices, including a real-estate business on the first floor, after the public broadcaster WNIN moved out. It is not a museum, so visit only on business or by appointment.
