Built in 1892 as a luxury destination for celebrities and politicians escaping northern winters, the Windsor Hotel is known for towers, balconies, and a three-story atrium lobby. Its best-known ghost story, retold with varying details over the years, centers on a housekeeper named Emily Mae and her young daughter Emma: as one version goes, Emily Mae's lover shoved her in anger into what he thought was a waiting elevator, sending mother and daughter falling three stories to their deaths. Guests report hearing Emma's footsteps running down the halls, catching a woman's reflection in a dark dress, and watching pots and pans fly off tables on their own.
Operating 1892 hotel in downtown Americus, now part of the Ascend Collection. Rooms are for guests, and the atrium lobby can be seen when you visit; it also offers historic haunted tours.
