Whitefish Point Light Station on Lake Superior marks the stretch of shoreline known as the Graveyard of the Great Lakes, where hundreds of ships have been lost, including the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. The light, first built in the 1840s and rebuilt as a steel skeletal tower in 1861, sits beside the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Visitors and staff report muffled voices, footsteps, doors swinging open and other poltergeist-like activity in the old life-saving station crew quarters, and a visiting psychic claimed dozens of spirits remain at the point. The Upper Peninsula Paranormal Research Society has investigated the site, and the stories are best read alongside the real history of the sailors lost offshore.
The light station and Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum are open to visitors in season for an admission fee; check the museum's hours before going.
