Fort Mackinac is a British-built military post on the bluff above Mackinac Island's harbor, begun in 1780 and later held by the United States, and it is now a state-run museum. Its ghost stories include the children of a post commander said to haunt the officers' quarters, and the old hospital, which is considered one of the most unsettled spots in the fort. Visitors and staff describe the sound of phantom footsteps and soldiers on patrol. Ghost Hunters investigated the fort, and Mackinac's ghost tours regularly mention it.
