The Read House traces its history to an 1847 inn in downtown Chattanooga, and the present building opened in 1926. Its best-known story is of Room 311, where a woman named Annalisa Netherly is said to have been murdered in the bathroom by a jealous lover in 1927. Guests have reported unexplained noises, voices, flickering lights, running water and shadowy figures there, and the hotel has restored the room to its 1920s look. The Read House is an operating historic hotel that acknowledges the legend. Local history also says Al Capone stayed at the hotel in the early 1930s around his federal tax trial, a story widely repeated though hard to confirm in surviving records.
An operating hotel; Room 311 can be requested when booking.
