The Music Hall in downtown Portsmouth was built in 1878 by members of the Peirce family after the town's earlier entertainment hall burned, and it claims to be the oldest operating theater in New Hampshire, with about 895 seats. Roxie Zwicker, author of Haunted Portsmouth, and New Hampshire Public Radio describe reports of cold spots, unexplained twinkling lights and music from an empty stage, and of audience members in period clothing who vanish.
