The Old York Gaol, built in 1719, is the oldest surviving prison in the United States and a National Historic Landmark in York Village. It held prisoners for well over a century and is now a museum run by the Old York Historical Society. The best-known ghost is Patience Boston, a woman held there, and tour guides have described waves of heavy feeling in the cells while visitors have reported hearing moans when no one else is present. The historical society tells these stories itself, and in 2026 it runs After Dark at the Old Gaol tours from September 12 through October 24. The building's documented history is its main draw.
