Stuckey's Bridge crosses the Chunky River in rural Lauderdale County, near Meridian and Enterprise. The 112-foot iron truss bridge dates to 1901 and replaced an earlier structure from around 1850; it is a Mississippi Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. It is closed to vehicles. Local legend says a man named Stuckey, a former member of the Dalton Gang, ran a riverside inn where he killed travelers for their money, and was caught and hanged from the bridge. Visitors say they have seen a lantern along the bank, heard splashes in the river, and seen a hanging figure on the bridge. The story is a legend, not a documented crime.
A historic bridge reached by a county road, closed to cars but walkable. Visit in daylight, stay on the roadway and do not trespass on neighboring private land.
