The Grand Opera House in downtown Meridian opened in 1890, closed in 1927 and stood vacant for decades before a restoration reopened it in 2006 as part of the Riley Center. Nicknamed The Lady, it is said to be haunted by a woman who sings on the stage when the building is quiet. Staff and visitors have heard the voice. Some say she is the woman in the portrait above the stage, while others suggest the actress Lillie Langtry, who performed in the era, but her identity is not known.
