The Chapel of the Cross, in the Mannsdale community near Madison, is an Episcopal church of Gothic Revival design built around 1850 to 1852 by enslaved craftsmen and laborers. Its best-known story concerns Helen Johnstone, who in 1859 was engaged to Henry Grey Vick, killed in a duel in Mobile, Alabama, shortly before their wedding. According to the story, Helen wore her wedding dress to his funeral, and visitors to the churchyard have since reported seeing a woman in a wedding dress at his grave or on a nearby bench. The chapel's graveyard is the setting of the legend, and the church is an active congregation.
Active church; the chapel is open for tours during its annual Day in the Country festival and otherwise by arrangement. Please be respectful in the churchyard and of any services.
