Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the battlefield of the 47-day Siege of Vicksburg in 1863, one of the turning points of the Civil War. Mississippi tourism lists the park for ghost stories, including the sounds of battle and cannon fire, shadowy soldiers, and the smell of smoke and gunpowder reported at night. The park holds more than 1,300 monuments, a driving tour and a national cemetery.
