At St. Michael's Cemetery, visitors report lights circling gravestones and voices heard within the cemetery at night. Officially designated a cemetery by King Charles IV of Spain in 1807 and formally platted in 1810, St. Michael's holds roughly 3,200 marked graves and traces Pensacola's history through Yellow Fever epidemics, shipwrecks, and generations of residents from around the world. Notable burials include Dorothy Walton, wife of Declaration of Independence signer George Walton; Stephen R. Mallory, U.S. Senator from Florida and the Confederacy's Secretary of the Navy; and Salvador T. Pons, Pensacola's first Black mayor, who served on the city council and as mayor in the 1870s.
Historic cemetery in downtown Pensacola, open to the public daily during posted daytime hours. Parking is on the surrounding streets. Treat the graves with respect.
