Perched on Pensacola's Naval Air Station, this 160-year-old lighthouse has been called one of the most haunted in America by the Travel Channel and was featured on a 2009 episode of Syfy's Ghost Hunters. Visitors and staff describe Sam Lawrence, head keeper from 1877 to 1885 — whose daughter Tennessee Avanda was born in the keeper's house in 1884 — still making his presence known in the stairwell and atop the tower, with a reputation for tugging at women's hair and touching their arms. Investigators say they've also made contact with two children, Lizzy and Joey, who died of yellow fever in 1922. Staff who work there describe the spirits less as a haunting and more as permanent residents who simply chose to stay.
The lighthouse stands on Naval Air Station Pensacola. The public can visit through the West Gate during posted daytime hours with a REAL ID or passport; the lighthouse and maritime museum charge admission and the tower can be climbed. After-hours tours use the lighthouse's shuttle rather than driving on base. Check pensacolalighthouse.org before going.
