St. Mary's Cemetery sits along the same stretch of railroad tracks that saw a real 1928 mail-train robbery — locally remembered as "The Great Train Robbery" — in which a group of men made off with roughly $133,000. Local accounts also describe a Prohibition-era speakeasy that once operated along the tracks nearby, said to have been the site of a gangland murder tied to Chicago's North Side gang wars, and a more recent, unconfirmed account of a fatal shooting near a gravesite in the 1990s. Late-night drivers along the cemetery's southern boundary report seeing a man leaning against a fence post who seems to react to passing cars before vanishing.
Working Catholic cemetery with daily visiting hours. Stay on the roads and paths, keep clear of services, and treat the graves with respect.
