Squire's Castle, in the North Chagrin Reservation of Cleveland Metroparks, is the stone gatehouse that English-born Standard Oil executive Feargus B. Squire built in the 1890s for a grand estate; the mansion was never built and the shell is now a ruin that visitors may walk through. The local legend, retold on News 5 and across Northeast Ohio, is that Mrs. Squire died in a fall or by hanging in the basement, and that her screams and a dim figure are seen at night. Historians find no record of any such death, but the story has become part of the park's lore.
Free Metroparks property open from dawn to dusk; the castle is a short walk from the parking lot. The park closes at dusk, so please do not visit after hours.
