Staff at the Rosemount Museum describe unexplained noises and small movements throughout the house. Ghost lists add reported sightings of a young girl, believed to be a Thatcher daughter who died in the house at a young age, and of a man taken to be John Thatcher himself in the attic, though these accounts are secondhand and the museum's own materials focus on the family's history. The 37-room mansion was begun in 1891 and completed in 1893 for the Thatcher family, prominent local merchants, and designed by the Victorian architect Henry Hudson Holly of New York City. It holds a genuine ancient Egyptian mummy among its collection, and beneath it runs a network of tunnels, not open to the public.
Historic mansion museum with guided tours Tuesday through Saturday late mornings and early afternoons. Tours cover all 37 rooms.
