The Rose Hotel stands on the bluff above the Ohio River in Elizabethtown and is among the oldest hotels in Illinois, with its earliest wing built around 1812 and additions made in 1848 and after the Civil War. Sarah Rose Baker, a widow who had worked at the hotel, bought it in 1891, and her family kept it until the state acquired it in 1988 and restored it, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It reopened as a bed and breakfast leased from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Illinois tourism lists it among its haunted stays, and guests and staff describe a woman, believed to be Sarah Rose, in the second-floor hallways and on the stairs, moved objects at night and a female voice.
Operating bed and breakfast on Main Street, leased from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, open to overnight guests and for tours and events; check the hotel's site for details.
