The Paramount Arts Center opened on September 5, 1931, as a movie palace designed by the Rapp and Rapp firm, and it remains the centerpiece of downtown Ashland as a restored performing arts venue. Staff and patrons tell of a ghost nicknamed Paramount Joe, and Kentucky Tourism lists the theater among the state's haunted places. Reports include voices and footsteps when the building is empty, lights that behave oddly and cold patches. The theater runs on a regular schedule of concerts, films and shows, so a ticket is the easiest way in.
