The Old Jail Museum in Smethport was once the McKean County jail and sheriff's residence; the front half was the sheriff's home and the back and cellar held prisoners until 1990. Five prisoners were executed in the basement, among them Ralph Crossmire, hanged in 1893 for killing his mother, who professed his innocence and promised to haunt the building. Staff and visitors report his presence, mostly as pranks rather than a full apparition, and the building is named on VisitPA's list as one of the state's most haunted. It is operated as a museum of the McKean County Historical Society.
Museum open weekday afternoons in season (Tuesday and Thursday in spring and fall, Monday through Friday in summer); check the historical society for hours and fall ghost tours.
