Ocala National Forest is home to the "Dark Man," a modern Florida legend describing a tall, shadowy figure in a long, hooded coat seen along remote forest roads between Daytona Beach and Ocala, sometimes reported lying by the roadside or sitting on bridge guardrails at night before vanishing. No official Forest Service or law enforcement record backs the story, but it remains one of Central Florida's most-repeated pieces of campfire folklore, alongside tales among the forest's seasonal campers of children's laughter with no children in sight.
A very large public national forest, open year-round. The legend isn't tied to a particular spot. Entering the forest is free, but developed springs and campgrounds charge fees. Stay on marked roads and trails and don't be out in the forest after dark.
