Montpelier Mansion in South Laurel is an eighteenth-century Georgian house built by the Snowden family and run today by Prince George's County Parks and Recreation for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. In October it hosts Tales of the Dearly Departed, a candlelit evening of ghost stories and tours with museum educators. Staff told the Baltimore Sun in 2014 that most of them had never encountered a ghost, though a longtime employee, Cleaven Woods, said he twice saw a woman in eighteenth-century clothing in the 1980s. Other stories tell of a Confederate soldier climbing the steps. The mansion treats the stories as lore, and its historic interpretation is the main attraction.
County-run historic house museum with scheduled tours; the October Tales of the Dearly Departed evening is ticketed. Check the park's site for hours and dates.
