The Patapsco Female Institute was a girls' boarding school from 1837 to 1891 on a hilltop above Ellicott City, with as many as 150 students at its peak, and its partly rebuilt ruins are now a historic park run by Howard County Recreation and Parks. Since 2016 the county has hosted Ghostly Guide tours there, and the ruins are the subject of long-told stories about Annie, a young girl in white said to be Annie Van Derlot, a planter's daughter who died of pneumonia during her first winter at the school. Visitors also report screams and a cold spot at the top of the large staircase. The Baltimore Sun and Washington Post have covered the tours.
County-run historic park with ruins and grounds open to visitors, and events such as Shakespeare performances and weddings; Ghostly Guide Halloween tours are ticketed. Call 410-313-5131 or check the Howard County site.
