Belmont Manor in Elkridge is a Georgian plantation house built in 1738, now owned by Howard County and used for weddings, events and conferences. A 1914 book, Colonial Mansions of Maryland and Delaware, recorded the Belmont ghost, an invisible carriage and retinue that residents heard arrive on dark, windy winter nights and head toward the stable. After the house reopened following a long renovation, workers reported a little girl running on the grounds, and the group Inspired Ghost Tracking, led by founder Margaret Ehrlich, said it photographed a child peeking around a doorway and described the spirits as friendly, including a man who suffered a heart attack while staying at the manor. The Baltimore Sun has covered public ghost investigations at Belmont, and the estate has hosted ghost-themed evenings. The accounts are visitor and investigator lore.
County-owned historic estate used for events and tours; public programs, including ghost-themed evenings, are listed on Belmont's site. Check the schedule or call ahead before visiting.
