McCosh Mill, the stone ruins of an 1870s grist mill on Wehadkee Creek, is said to be haunted by a woman in white and the man she loved. Local legend holds that a 19th-century owner discovered his wife's affair and killed her and her lover at the mill. Visitors describe a woman in white drifting near the ruins, screams, and a male apparition said to be the murdered lover, still wandering the surrounding woods.
James Eichelburger McCosh built the mill in the early 1870s, and it ground corn and wheat for area farms until 1958. It is the oldest surviving stone grist mill in Alabama and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bought it in 1970 for the West Point Lake project. A later fire destroyed the roof and floors, leaving the stone walls and the mill race.
Mill ruins on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land near West Point Lake, on Wehadkee Creek in Randolph County, Alabama. Check with the Corps (West Point Lake) for current access and directions before going, and leave the remains undisturbed.
