Mayhayley Lancaster (1875-1955) was a real Heard County figure — a lawyer, teacher, midwife, and one of the county's largest landowners — as well as a self-styled fortune teller whose predictions reportedly helped crack two of Georgia's most notorious murder cases. Buried at Caney Head Methodist Church in Roosterville, her grave has been repeatedly vandalized since 1973, when the original stone was broken; a second replacement was also damaged before the current, third marker was installed. Local legend holds that those who steal or deface pieces of her gravestone suffer misfortune until the fragments are returned — including one teenager, said to have died in a car accident after defacing the grave to impress his friends.
Her grave is in the small cemetery at Caney Head United Methodist Church in rural Heard County. Visitors traditionally leave a dollar and a dime on the stone, the price she charged for a reading. Visit in daylight and treat the church grounds with respect.
