At the Leu House, visitors on guided tours describe apparitions of Harry and Mary Jane Leu, the house's later owners,, most often seen on the second-story porch, cold spots in the upstairs bedrooms, and footsteps heard through the empty house. Architect John T. Mizell built this house in 1858; among its later owners were Duncan Pell and his wife, silent-film star and director Helen Gardner, before Harry and Mary Jane Leu bought the property along with 40 surrounding acres in 1936. The Leus spent the next 25 years traveling the world and bringing back exotic plants, including some 240 camellia varieties, before deeding the whole estate to the City of Orlando in 1961 to become the public botanical gardens that now surround it.
The house museum sits within Harry P. Leu Gardens, a paid botanical garden open daily. House tours are offered on set days, and the museum has had temporary closures, so check leugardens.org before going.
