In March 1988, Knox College freshman Andrea Racibozynski was beaten to death with a brick in a stairwell of Seymour Hall, a men's dormitory, by fellow student Clyde A. Best, who was later convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Several of the stairwell's light bulbs had been burned out or turned off the night of the murder. An Illinois jury later found the college negligent in her death. Students say the scent of perfume can still be detected in the stairwell late at night, as though Andrea's spirit keeps watch over the dorm.
Working college. Campus visits go through the admissions office, and visitors can see exhibits in Old Main, a National Historic Landmark, but classrooms and residence halls are not open to the public.
