James Dean, raised in Fairmount after his mother's death, is buried in the town's Park Cemetery beneath a headstone that isn't the original — the first was stolen from the grave and never recovered, and a replacement has since been stolen and restored more than once. Fans still travel to Fairmount year-round, and the town holds an annual festival in his honor. Visitors have reported the smell of cigarette smoke near an old sycamore by the grave, sometimes with a small, unexplained point of fire that vanishes when approached, along with a sense of being watched or gently touched around midnight.
Park Cemetery, open daily, where James Dean is buried near the Winslow farm he grew up on. His headstone is often covered with tributes. Visit quietly and respect other graves.
